Canoe Safety Info

  • In general, the following guidelines should be followed for safety:

    • NEVER stand up in the canoe!

    • Use caution when loading/unloading; 1 person at a time and move slowly!

    • Try to maintain balance while in the canoe. Avoid sudden movements.

    • Be prepared for possible bad weather. Dress for the conditions and be prepared for conditions to change rapidly.

  • Mountain weather is variable and can change quickly. As a minimum, we recommend bringing:

    • a rain jacket

    • a sun hat

    • a full water bottle

  • You should be prepared for any of these things any day of the season! We don’t give refunds for bad weather, or offer the chance to come back to the dock to wait out a storm and the go back out to finish your hour. It is in your best interest to come prepared and check the forecast for Yoho National Park before coming.

    In general:

    • most people can keep canoeing through light to moderate rain without a problem if they’re wearing rain gear.

    • Strong winds can be challenging for new canoeist, especially for a single adult paddler in a canoe. We sometime restrict who can go out in strong winds, or even temporarily pause rentals.

    • Thunder storms happen throughout the spring & summer months. Sometimes they pass by in the distance and can be ignored, while other times they hit the lake directly. During a thunderstorm over the lake, it is always recommended to get of the water, either back to the dock or to the closest shore to wait it out.

Other…

  • Our season runs from approximately May long weekend until Thanksgiving weekend, but is dependent on the date the ice melts in the spring, as well as the weather in October.

  • We often have big lineups at opening and closing time. The last canoes go out at 4:45pm (unless otherwise posted), so don’t come too late as we stop sending boats out at closing time, regardless of the length of the remaining lineup!

  • We’re located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia. We are on Mountain Time, the same as Calgary/Edmonton.

  • No. You will need to purchase this either in Field at the visitor information center, or at the West entrance to Yoho National Park.

  • No. We only rent canoes.
